Lightswitch

“We all know it, don’t we? What happens when curfew hits in Arcadia?”

“Flick, flick, flick, a chorus of lights going dark one by one, the levels bathed in a perpetual darkness that we’ve come to call the Night.”

“Would you believe I used to be scared of curfew as a kid? Inky blackness on all sides, unknown monsters stalking the abyss around me. It was the perfect breeding grounds for fear.”

“How does one beat what they can’t even touch?”

“When the clock strikes eight and the lights go out, only the night reigns supreme.”

“Or so I thought.”

“As I grew older, however, my fear began to diminish. I found that I understood the darkness, I saw through the façade of power it had.”

“Because every morning, without fail, the lights would flicker to life and radiance would rain down upon the levels.”

“Eviscerating the night and leaving only remnants and memories in its place.”

“That’s real power.”

“But I have a question to raise you. If the nighttime isn’t as powerful as my young mind was lead to believe, then what was above it?”

“And the answer is simple.”

“The one being above darkness, above light.”

“Sitting above it all is the man who controls the switch.”

“Night, I admit, I respect what you did at Ring King. Like a wraith in the darkness you kicked and fought your way through the ranks until that crown came to rest on your brow. A paragon of darkness, vengeance.”

“You became The Night.”

“Like the flickering of the lights high above, it felt inevitable, didn’t it? That the clock would strike eight, the bulbs and competitors blown out like candles until only you remained.”

“I might even say that those who rest beneath you are right to fear you.”

“To fear someone they don’t understand.”

“Yet, in reality, I think you might find yourself lucky to have no faced me.”

“Because I understand the darkness better than anyone ever could. That all you need to vanquish it and bring about sanctuary to its victims isn’t a fight, nor a war.”

“All you need is a light switch.”

“With a flip of the finger beacons of daylight puncturing the veil of night like gunshots, tearing you asunder with ruthless aggression and leaving only radiance in its wake.”

“A switch that I will soon inherit as I claim my birthright as baron of our home.”

“Power that means more than any crown, Night. I will be the one in control of not just OSW, but of the world in which it exists.”

“I’m the man who holds the switch.”

“And at Ascension I’m blinding you with my light.”

“One flip of the switch, one Hostile Down to the skull as I eviscerate you where you stand.”

“Ending your reign over me as quickly as it began.”

“Because nobody is above the Law, Night.”

“Not a king.”

“Not darkness.”

“And especially not you.”

“As my radiance blinds you, remember.”

“I am the Law.”
