Lie with Dragons

Wolf Fang Ayame sits down picking out a large book covered in drawings that seem created for children. With an unamused expression she reads.

“For ages and ages people told stories to keep their next of kin in line. And no other kind of story was more terrifying and effective than the story of the dragon whose existence was of that to be slain by the hero. Think of it a fearful monster who can be felled by nothing more than the ambition and determination of the human spirit and a virtuous soul.”

“So with that I have one thing to ask the three men who stand before me. Are you content with the fate that you have resigned yourself to. Are you content with resigning yourself to being a duplicitous ugly mirror of what you claim to uphold?”

“Using fear to control the kin that surround you, Rage to guide you, or power and deception to get your way?” She let out a snort of air from her nostrils. “No man can stand up and call themselves human with that hanging above you all. It’s merely the dragons that you have cursed yourselves into being”

“While it may be a chosen action, the best thing about it is there is a road to redemption. There is a path through the natural order to regain your humanity. To shed your skin and not be a creature whose only purpose is to be slain.”

“But as it stands right now? The moment I will be seeing you three again I will have no choice but to step up and slay you. For a dragon’s only purpose is to cause suffering on this mortal coil. A dragon’s only purpose is to burn what stands in it’s way. Blinded by nothing but greed and rage”

With an unamused expression she closes the book.

“A dragon’s purpose is to be slain. The end point of the hero’s journey. There is no such thing as a happy ending for a dragon. For they all end the same way. With the hero’s blade thrust through their chest.”

She takes a deep breath as she puts the book away onto the shelf.

“I can only hope that you will all find your way away from your horrid metamorphosis before it’s too late. For eventually there will be a time where things have gone too far and you all will have lost your way. Too deep into the woods too and the line behind who you were and who you are will have blurred too much.”
