When there’s nothing but death and misery all around you, what can you do to escape the horror inflicted upon you even for a moment? The people of Arcadia may be sated by the good will of charity and their bellies full but their minds are still scattered and lost, the need for something…anything to drift them away into fantastical happiness even for a moment comes around.
Invigorating the mind and imagination can be one of the greatest things you ever do for someone. To allow them to lose themselves in a world they truly deserve even for a moment is truly special. For a master chef may feed the world but an entertainer, he gives the world a reason to continue living.
And for far too long, when the Arcadian people need entertainment that keeps them from the violence and wrath of Olympus, they call on the Circus.
Since anyone can remember, the Way Circus has enraptured and enthralled the Arcadian people with the sheer variety of entertainment and the almost supernatural ability of it’s performers to inspire those who see them. From the acrobatics flipping and diving to extraordinary heights to the strongmen showcasing feats of power that even the gods would struggle to overcome. And to yes…even the freaks whose reception could be comedic as the people laugh at their misfortune or even fascination at the abominations some deity willed into life.
The audience enthralled, their attention solely on you. The Ringmaster, the purveyor of their escapism as they cheer your very name, you bask in their adulation and then the curtain closes. They go home, wide eyed smiles, peaceful minds and then they wake up.
The world is as dark and bleak as it always was and the escape you gave them, the peace you gifted them, has already faded away. Just a taste of the good life to entice them to come back again and again and again. Bankrupting the poor as you deny them their fix without credits and they slowly sink down into the depths of Hades or lose themselves into darkness.
But yours isn’t the only entertainment. The glitz and glamour is only fleeting, because the true entertainment is the one you can give others. The puppetshows, throwing a ball in a park, even telling stories amongst one another. It’s less potent then yours but it lasts longer, it means so much more then the Circus ever will.
The people are starting to realize it, your own employees are starting to wake up and realize that all you are is a virus Klaus. The scum who tried to bottle happiness and push it onto the weak and helpless. But peace doesn’t come from underneath the bright lights, it comes from caring for those around you, comes from wanting to make this world a better place together.
It’s a pity you won’t be around to see it, as people like me show them a better fantasy world then you ever could, the houses will dry up. Your employees will abandon you and the spinning top will fade and come to a stop, a decaying momentum of empty gratification.
Just like the refuse who used to run it.
