Kept in the Dark

The NightPromo, The Night

“My mom told me that she was an agoraphobe during childhood.”

“Her parents said that if she stepped outside their apartment, she’d be torn to shreds by monsters her childlike mind couldn’t comprehend. Then, when they were done tearing her apart, they’d devour her remains and pick their teeth with her bones.”

“The tale they fabricated affected her deeply, causing her to hide in her room for many years. She believed the lie until her teenage years, when both parents died of an overdose and her curiosity became too much to handle.”

“She was still paranoid about what monsters would await her the moment she opened that door. She was frightened about the prospect of having her remains swallowed by creatures that wanted her dead to temporarily satiate their never ending hunger.”

“Nevertheless, she opened the door and slowly stepped into Arcadia.”

“No monster rushed over and attempted to kill her. In fact, when she looked up and saw the bright lights for the first time in her life, she realized the deception she allowed herself to believe for thirteen years.”

“There never were any monsters. It was all about controlling their daughter and ensuring the protective services never came and gave her a better life.”

“Much like my mother once had, the Preservationists fear that something’s out there that will destroy all life as we know it. They don’t know what lies in wait for them beyond Arcadia’s door, but they’ve been convinced that it wouldn’t be anything good.”

“Ezekiel was told that the outside of Arcadia is an atheistic place where the good word of his lord has never been spoken of. According to Zeus and his cronies, Satan has won and turned the world outside into a living hellscape. Demons supposedly roam that domain, looking for their next meal, and the zealot is looking incredibly tasty.”

“Eclipse was told that there is nothing thrilling about the outside of Arcadia. It’s a dull place that forces everyone to blend in, lest they get eaten by the monsters for standing out. They’d take one look at her and decide that her lack of fear makes her an easy target, so she’d be better off staying inside, lest she wants to die.”

“Sunshine was told that the monsters like to eat children. The innocent faces that he liked to corrupt would be the first ones to be consumed by the forces of evil that lurk behind that door. Unless he was okay with seeing the beacons of hope get torn apart by their claws, he’d be better off staying inside with the rest of the Preservationists.”

“It’s all bullshit peddled by Zeus, in the end.”

“I don’t buy the monsters outside of Arcadia story. It’s all just a method to control people into staying behind and leaving a potentially better life.”

“The Preservationists might be agoraphobic and prefer to rot in a gilded cage, but I’m stepping through that door into the great unknown.”

“Into the darkness.”

“Darkness comes before the dawn. And I am the Night.”
