Rabbits of the Moon

Wolf Fang Ayame sits by a fire casually patting one of her wolves. The warm glow illuminates both of them. “Eclipse, had I known what your actions would’ve been at Red Snow. I wouldn’t have gotten involved. They were of no matter to me. In that same vein had you known what you had unleashed when you took the life of a wolf in the grove? You would’ve absolutely thought twice about taking that innocent creature’s life. And desecrating the trees with its blood.”

“So tell me what causes an Eclipse. A rather interesting question, but the most common answer is the moon. And if you stroll through all cultures, if you stroll through every mythology Chinese, Norse, Celtic, you name it. There’s a common denominator. The moon is not enviable. It is always hunted down or represents prey. Most of the time rabbits if we are to be accurate. And so that’s where you reside. An Eclipse forever hunted.”

“So where does that leave me in this little equation? Well wolves always stared at the moon with such hungry eyes. So much so that they howled at it in deep deep hunger. Oh how they wanted to get their teeth deep into the stomach of the little rabbits that lived on the moon. But it was always so far away. It took the action of one pair of wolves to actually step forward and consume the moon to have the first eclipse.”

“The world was terrified but the moon came back. Like all things do, for the moon knew its place as prey. It hid when the wolves howled for it did not want to be consumed again. To break the natural order would be for the moon to kill the wolf.”

“And that in fact is what you did. You took so much pleasure, so much joy in being hunted and chased like the rabbit you were. The moment a wolf came in and began to gnash its teeth. You ended its life.”

“And so little rabbit, let me finish the story of what happens to someone who decides to break the natural order. For there was always a bigger wolf. One who would cause the end times when he lifts a finger. His name is Fenrir…
When he swallows the moon the end times will come and there will be no more Eclipses.”

“The truth of the matter is, you never had control. The moment you entered my grove. The moment you disrupted the natural order. You forced yourself on a fate everlasting. For an eclipse can only be caused and be undone by a wolf. And just like moons before you, you will be swallowed whole by one. Thus is the only way to return you back to the natural order. After all we can’t have rabbits thinking they’re predators can we now?”
