The Jury

When the law system is stripped down to the barest of bones. There are only three separate roles that are deemed the most essential. That being those of Judge, Jury and Executioner. The best of ways this is a method that is handed out smoothly. In the worst of ways people yearn for all three powers to take into their hands. And try to reshape the world how they see fit. This is a corrupting force in the world. As some people hold one role above all not caring about the balance. And so they let themselves corrupt and wander around unchecked.

For example our honorable Captain Arcadia, he saw it fit to judge everyone who passed by him. For the sole crime of not rising to his own standards of a hero. Ignore the brutality and contradictory actions that he might have to take to get to his end goal. It’s all justified in the end. For that’s just the role of a hero. The shining beacon that everyone will rise for, because he can always be redeemed. However should you falter? Well he’s got a whole book that he can throw at you, a whole lecture. You were guilty the moment he locked his eyes on you.

Speaking of, we have the man at the gallows pole, Gravedigger. You know your job of executioner and you do it well. The more bodies that you have piled up just means that you’re doing a better job. So who cares if a few innocents are caught up in the crossfire. As long as you’ve gotten the guilty party its all justified in the end. Your apathy towards human life has overtaken you. Everyone you see is just another life for the gallows and cries for mercy are just music to your very ears.

And there lies the fundamental problem with those two roles. They both believe that they will never be on the receiving end of their treatment so they act with impunity.

This is unlike the role I will take in our dance. The Jury, a patient and watchful role. It acts with the assumption that the treatment they give will be given back in kind. It is one of fairness. And most of all it is the one that was created to keep the Judge and Executioner in check.

The Judge never expects to be judged before the world, and the executioner never expects to be the one to have to beg for mercy. They never expect these things until it is far too late and their time has come. A new Judge and a new Executioner will have come to replace them.

While the old Judge and Executioner will be led away the jury will still be there observing. Like they always do.

Such is the purpose of the dragon princess. To act accordingly with the will of the people and what I have observed. Not in a self serving manner.
