All Heroes Die

[Jasper Redgrave sits at a desk. Before him sits a cardboard box that he looks through, pulling out old books that he places in his lap.]

“My father used to buy these for me.”

“So long as I was a nice boy throughout the week, I could always expect to open my eyes on a Saturday morning and see one of these comics staring back at me.”

[He lifts a comic from his lap and flips through it’s pages.]

“This one was about a hero. A hero who promised to protect his people from the forces of evil. In the end, he was a washed up sell out.”

[Redgrave tosses the book onto the table in front of him and picks up another.]

“Oooh, I remember this one well. This one was the story of a vigilante who’s biggest nemesis was himself. His obsession with being known as a hero is what began his downfall.”

[Jasper throws the book down on top of the other.]

[One by one, Jasper picks up a comic. He examines the cover and then tosses it onto the stack that’s building on the table in front of him.]

“No matter the name on the cover, no matter the color of the pages.. each one of these stories were the same.”

“In the end, all heroes die.”

[Redgrave’s tone grows cold.]

“Captain Arcadia, the self proclaimed hero of Arcadia.”

“A man who promised the whole of our population that he would protect them from wrong doing. That he would banish all the evil from Arcadia and that he, single handedly, could bring Arcadia peace and justice.”

“Your story is no different, Captain.”

“Since coming here to Old School Wrestling, you’ve operated under the guise of a super hero.”

“Arcadia wants nothing more than to be able to believe in somebody. They want nothing more that to confide in someone to be their savior. And you’ve preyed upon that want in order to get recognition.”

“But you’ve never been here for Arcadia’s people, have you Captain?”

[Jasper places the last comic book from his lap on the table and he leans forward.]

“Since you’ve walked through those doors, your obsession hasn’t been with protecting the people. Your motives aren’t to bring the evil doers of Arcadia to justice.”

“You’ve only been infatuated with The Kingdom.”

“You’ve only concerned yourself with Sebastian Boswick.”

[Redgrave shakes his head.]

“You’ve allowed your obsessions with Boswick hold you back from accomplishing anything that would be deemed heroic.”

“You’re no hero, Captain. And you’re certainly not fit to be King.”

“At Ascension, you’ll come for my crown.”

“You’ll try once again to put your paranoia of Sebastian behind you and move on with your life.”

“But you will fail.”

[Jasper stands. He taps the top comic book to draw our attention.]

[It’s title? “Captain Arcadia vs The Killer King: The End of Heroism?“]

“Because just like in every comic book..”

“Tonight.. the hero dies.”

[The Killer King flashes a toothy, sickening grin as he takes his leave.]

[Leaving us to focus on the artwork of Captain Arcadia slain that covers the comic book.]

[Fade.]
