Broccoli

Felix FoleyFelix Foley, Promo

[Felix Foley sits at the dinner table as a young boy, pushing his fork around a plate of greens.]

“Come on son, eat your vegetables.” [Momma Foley would prompt.] “They’ll make you big and strong.”

[Felix reluctantly stabs a piece of broccoli with his fork, putting it tentatively into his mouth and chewing with disgust.]

[The Present Day.]

[Felix stands in his momma’s kitchen wearing a muscle man apron, a spatula in his hand. He’s stirring around vegetables in a pan of oil.]

“I’ve never been one to eat my greens. My mom tried everything. She told me they’d make me big and strong. But they didn’t. I still couldn’t stop Fernicus from hurting either of us.”

[He stirs around the hissing pan.]

“She even said that since green was my favorite color, I’d like them. We’d share an affinity, she claimed.

Well, I love green, but I still didn’t like them.”

[Foley grabs a plate and puts it on the side, grabbing his pan by the handle.]

“That’s the funny thing about food, isn’t it? Some of it is an acquired taste. It’s not even a decision you make; it’s engrained into your genes. You might put something in your mouth one day and simply not like the taste. People think that’s choice, but it isn’t. You don’t decide whether you like a certain type of food or not, that’s kinda decided for you. But there are times when you look at something and without ever trying it, decide you won’t like it based on appearance alone.”

[He dishes up the food.]

“People are very similar, when you think about it.

Take you, Anton.

I’ve taken one look at you, and I’ve already decided that I don’t like you.”

[Foley puts the pan down and takes his plate of greens over to the table, taking a seat behind the plate.]

“I did that with Broccoli.”

[He smiles, looking at the broccoli on his place.]

“In hindsight, that might’ve been a mistake. See, I looked at that broccoli and its disgusting appearance, and thought I’d hate it. I didn’t want to eat it. I didn’t even want to smell it. Likewise, I look at you and the ugly personality you’ve displayed, and I’ve already made up my mind that Anton Savor is not for Felix Foley.

But as I sit here with a plate of greens that include broccoli, it’s dawned on me that maybe I’ve judged it too hastily. Perhaps, just perhaps, I ought to give broccoli a chance. Perhaps I ought to give you a chance too, Anton.”

[Foley stabs a piece of broccoli with his fork and pops it in his mouth.]

[He chews eagerly at first.]

[Then his face becomes sour.]

[And finally, he spits it out.]

Yuk!

[He grabs a glass of water and chugs.]

“But then again, maybe I was right all along. No, in fact, I was right all along.

I don’t like broccoli. It’s disgusting inside and out…

And I don’t like you, Anton Savor.

But at Warzone, I will at least give you a taste. Just expect to be spat back out.”

[Foley smiles.]
