Death’s Ferryman

“Gather ’round, gather ’round, for I have a story to tell..”

[Jasper Redgrave sits before us in a dark wooded area that is lit only by the campfire that Jasper has built between us.]

“There once was a lonely man with no purpose. He traveled the vast lands until his legs wouldn’t carry him any longer before he needed a place catch some rest. As day turned to night, the lonely man hunkered down and built camp for the night.”

“Through the shadows, a tiny voice called to him.”

“The voice whispered to him. ‘You seem to be lost and without purpose, young boy,’ he took notice, ‘perhaps I have purpose for you.'”

“Into the light stepped a shadowy figure. Death.”

“Death chuckled to himself as the man grew fearful.”

“‘I’m not ready to die.’ said the young man. ‘Please, sir.'”

“To which Death replied, ‘Relax. I have a proposal. Should you work for me and become my ferryman, I will spare your life on this day. Should you fail to carry out the task of ferrying my souls, it is then that I will come for yours.”

“Many years went by and the young man did exactly as he was told. Night after night, the poor lad spent the graveyard shift ferrying the many souls that Death had reaped to their greener pastures.”

“The young man grew old over the years, yet he never waivered from his work.”

“In his old years, the man became ill. He became weak and unable to carry out the task he had been assigned. And so the day came where the ferry never left it’s dock. The man stood at the pier, looking on with the desire to carry out his work, but not the capabilities.”

“‘I just can’t go on’ he muttered under his breath. No sooner than those words escaped his lips, lightning strikes overhead and strikes him dead.”

[Jasper leans closer to the fire, peering over it.]

“Tombstone..”

“When we first crossed paths a few months ago, I spared your life. I allowed you to walk away thinking that you would be useful to me.”

“But it’s apparent to me now that you’ve lost your luster. You were once a one man wrecking crew, now substituting your work to a couple of lackeys.”

“You may have all of Arcadia fooled, but you’re not The Ferryman you once was. What used to be an easy job for you to carry out day to day has now become a difficult task.”

“While you’ve grown weaker, I’ve been growing stronger.”

“The bodies have been falling. The souls have been lining up at the dock.”

“But you’re unable to carry out your part of the deal, Tombstone.”

“And this week, when you’re unable to push the ferry from the dock..”

[Jasper laughs as a wind suddenly kicks up.]

I will be there to send you on your way..”

[His laugh gains in volume as the wind suddenly snuffs the flame before Jasper.]

[Fade.]
