Lawless

[Cade sits before a pile of files, the name ‘Jasper Redgrave’ printed across the front.]

“For years I really thought that Arcadia’s justice system was infallible. The perfect marriage of harsh and fair that insured the world around us ran smoothly. It was pretty simple, black and white, even. Evil gets locked away, and the good Samaritan walks free.”

[He shakes his head, flipping open Redgrave’s folder, pictures of his demented gallery spilling forth.]

“Look at these pictures, I want you to stare into the crimson abyss of Redgrave’s gallery, I want you to drink in the monstrosity. Now, I want you to tell me this man? This demon? He deserves to walk free. He’s allowed to exist in the same world we do, allowed the same privileges we are.”

[Jackson flips through the pictures, more disgusting gore filling our eyes.]

“Not just to walk freely, but to wear a crown on his head. Doesn’t that just fucking drive you mad? That for everything he’s done, for everything he’s going to do, there’s no consequences?  Jasper Redgrave made me realize justice wasn’t black and white when he splattered the justice system in red.”

“Now, let me show you another folder.”

[He pulls out a new document, the name ‘Jackson Cade’ across the front.]

“What do you think you’re going to find in my file? Are you going to rip it open, spilling out mountains of corruption? Of moral failings? Or, are you going to simply set your eyes upon report upon report about a man who gave his all for the innocent people of Arcadia? Of the piles of documents showing how I risked life and limb, how I suffered physically and mentally for the good of the people?”

“The only reason the monster in the other file was ever even temporarily locked up was because of me. I suffered through his torture, endured the dread, and all I ever got for it was a smack in the face. I was berated for my determination, told to have just let that sick fuck run freely.”

[Cade chuckles dryly, standing up from the table.]

“Well, I didn’t. And when I gained the office of sheriff I promised myself I’d never let a man like Redgrave go unpunished. But now Narcissa is punishing me for my resolve. Taking me to court, trying to pass off me and my record as immoral and wrong. She wants to force me from my office, even force me behind bars.”

“She’s shown me that Arcadia is a lawless place. A broken system that may never be fixed.”

[He snatches up Redgrave’s file.]

“So, if they want to vilify me no matter what I do? Then I suppose I should make my own justice. Starting with Jasper, Doom, and Muerte. You three are as vile as they come. Murderers, every last fucking one of you. Well, you know what?”

“No one is above the Law.”

“And in a broken place like Arcadia? I am the Law.”
