Somebody Else’s Problems

In Gravedigger, Promo by Gravedigger

THE MORTUARY – NIGHT

An eerie fog. Tombstones as far as the eye can see.

In the distance, the sound of footsteps. Gravedigger walks with a purpose, stopping at a grave.

The headstone reads Carlos Quita.

GRAVEDIGGER

“Everybody’s got problems. But when Carlos had em, everyone on the block had em. Sleeping rough was difficult and you know, people found different ways of dealing with it. Carlos didn’t have many friends. Neither did I. But when your life is on the streets and there’s no-where else to go, you find a family in the gutter real fast.”

He takes a seat at the base of the grave, his shoes off and feet in the mud.

GRAVEDIGGER

“It’s funny how one person can make their problems belong to everyone else. See, Carlos liked to hurt people. He never hurt me, but others? That was easy. He blamed his pop for that. Everything he did wrong; it was pops fault.

Those sorts of desires stayed well buried until drugs took hold. That’s when Carlos became something different entirely.”

Gravedigger shakes his head.

GRAVEDIGGER

“But blaming everyone else for your problems only leads to one place – the grave. If you can’t own up and take responsibility for what you are and what you do, the downfall is sharp and fast. Just ask Carlos here… if you can.

Felix, how long do you think you can blame your daddy for everything wrong in your life? That man made mistakes and you were probably the biggest one, but he’s dead and gone. He’s worm food. He’s kicking up daisy’s and yet you still find fault with the things he did.”

He sighs.

GRAVEDIGGER

“And Jasper, nothing you do is your fault, right? That murderous streak of yours isn’t your fault, is it? Nah. How could it be? It’s the victims. They did it to themselves. They snared themselves in your traps and made themselves victims of your barbarity.”

Gravedigger stands up.

GRAVEDIGGER

“Then you have the chemist. He’s innocent in all of this; always has been. He hasn’t done a fucking thing to deserve his reputation, yet it’s served up on a platter like cake and he’s eating the whole fucking thing.

You people are pathetic. Just like Carlos, you blame everyone else for your mistakes. For Felix it’s his father. For Jasper it’s his victims. For Nox it’s the people. Everyone but you.

When Carlos made his problems my problems, I made them go away.”

He looks down at the grave with a smile.

GRAVEDIGGER

“I put him and them in the ground.

Because there’s not a point in which your problems become my problems and when you try and make it so, just like with Carlos, I’ll bury you six feet fucking deep with them.”

Gravedigger walks away.

GRAVEDIGGER

“Any grave but my own.”
