Where Were You

“Where were you?”

“I feel like I’ve heard those words a hundred times but it always comes out the same gut wrenching way.”

“Tears welled up in their eyes, broken heart laid bare, throats hoarse from screaming, begging to know just why I couldn’t help them, help the ones they loved.”

“It’s a question I’ve asked myself time and time again.”

“When the Red Light District became ground zero for Apokalypsis and my partner was left in pieces, where was I?”

“When Captain Riggs drew his last breath and his body went cold beneath Jasper’s blade, where was I?”

“As he took your loved ones, Nero, and hid them away from you as leverage for our match…”

“Where. Was. I?”

“Truth be told, the deeper I look for the answer, the more it becomes clear to me.”

“I was trying.”

“Hunting down Redgrave feverishly into the night in a vain attempt at apprehending him, my body sore, my soul scarred from the horrors I’ve seen. Fighting tooth and nail to bring about justice in a world where the term has lost all meaning.”

“Because I wasn’t just trying, Nero. I was failing.”

“No matter how much I accomplished, how close I got to victory, I always came up short in my goal.”

“But no more.”

“You and your Watch Dogs surveilled all of Arcadia, haven’t they? You’ve bore witness to every last drop of blood spilled on the ground, every last life extinguished by the vile men who live within these walls. You’ve seen it all, you should know where I was.”

“Yet you don’t.”

“So caught up in your own vendettas, your hatred, that you’ve allowed yourself to become blind to what’s really going on. Tunnel vision leaving you oblivious to anything but your own small minded goals.”

“You don’t see the end game here. All you can bear to think about is your family, your own problems.”

“And all my trying? It’s lead to something far greater.”

“The end to all of this. The final steps to the success I’ve craved so deeply for so long.”

“It all starts with you.”

“With me putting you down on the mat and pinning you for the three, with me progressing to the finals of this tournament and laying claim to my crown.”

“As soon as that gold touches my head, as soon as you’re finally able to see what this has all come to.”

“You’ll need not ask where I was.”

“But where were you?”

“When Zeus’ heir took the throne and claimed the crown, where were you?”

“When the people of  Arcadia tasted real freedom for the first time, where were you?”

“When the most vile our home has to offer finally face justice, Nero, where were you?”

“Because you’ll know where I was.”

“I was taking a seat on my throne.”

“Ascending to the top of the pyramid one step at a time.”

“Bringing about justice to a world that has long since forgotten it.”

“No one will be above the Law.”

“And you’ll see, Nero.”

“That I am the Law.”
