Delusions of Grandeur

In Mr. Kleen, Promo by Mr. Kleen

[Mr. Kleen looks at his reflection in a dirty bathroom mirror. We can’t tell how he’s feeling by the way he’s staring at himself, but his train of thought quickly returns when he sprays some window cleaner on the glass.]

“There’s a sickness that’s spreading throughout Arcadia that shows no physical symptoms. It’s a type of mental illness that makes people think they’re more important than Zeus himself.”

[The janitor pulls out a rag and begins to wipe the mirror down with it.]

“It’s called narcissism. This disease causes affected people to develop a massive ego that demands constant praise and adoration. If they can’t get that, then they’ll lash out at their so called ‘detractors’ until they get what they want or are left alone.”

[Kleen manages to dry off the entire mirror with relative ease. With a nod, he wheels his cart of cleaning tools out of the bathroom.]

“Doctors think it stems from how their parents raised them. If they were abused or placed on a pedestal at an early age, they’re more likely to develop this ailment in the future.”

[He chuckles.]

“Doubly so if they were groomed to be a legendary hero by their delusional pop.”

[The custodial manager goes to turn into another bathroom. Inside, the mirror is even filthier than the last one, much to his horror. He sits in stunned silence for a moment before sighing and spraying more cleaning solution on it.]

“Destructo Boy was trained by his dad to fulfill an unobtainable task. As a result, he gained an elevated sense of self that needed to overexaggerate his accomplishments in order to feel like he was meeting his old man’s expectations.”

[Since the mirror is so dirty, Kleen opts not to use a rag and instead goes with the Mop of Justice to clean it.]

“His unnecessarily high self confidence blinds him from accepting that he’s just a kid that needs more training if he wants take over his father’s place. However, since he won’t accept critiques from anyone, including his more skilled parent, he lashes out against him and everyone else that dares to say his help is inadequate.”

[When he finishes cleaning the other mirror, he places the Mop of Justice back into the bucket and begins to leave the room.]

“Face it, James, you’re no different from the filth that you claim to fight against. You’re not fighting for a cleaner Arcadia, you’re fighting to satiate a disease that was implanted into your head by your parents at a young age.”

[The janitor wheels his cart back into his office, where he sets it to the side without much fuss.]

“The only way to cure such a sickness is to remind you of your place in the world. You’ll be thrown into the bin like the garbage human being you are and realize that you aren’t made for greatness. Only failure.”

[Beat.]

“When we meet in that ring, know that no matter what happens, my hands will remain cleaner than your disgusting ego.”

[Cut.]
