We Need To Talk

Flashback

A young girl is hanging out with her friends in the cafeteria of Arcadian High School.

Next to her is a young man her true attention is focused on.

Hands entwined and eyes as fixated as be, they have to be high school sweethearts and you can see there might be enough potential there for them to last forever.

The bell rings and the friends go to class leaving our two young lovers by themselves.

“We need to talk.”

The young boy says breaking the bliss in the air.

“About what?”

The girl’s voice is trembling.

“Us.”

“Please don’t do this.”

“I have to Narcy, I don’t see a future with you…”

Present day

“That was the first time a boy broke my heart, certainly not the last, but ever since that day, those four words, we need to talk, chill me to the bone.”

“I’m no longer the strong, independent woman you see, I just withdraw from everything and turn into that 16 year old girl who breaks at any sign of abandonment.”

“We need to talk is a statement I don’t take likely, my aversion to it exacerbated the moment Zeus used it.”

“The first time I spray painted an image about him wasn’t some call to arms, it wasn’t a way to start an uprising. It was simply a wife trying to get her husband’s attention. I thought that maybe if he thought other people saw the worst in him, he would change and go back to the man I fell in love with.”

“Instead, he showed me his true colors and didn’t even see me as a person. He said we need to talk and laid out his demands of loyalty and obedience. He didn’t show empathy or love. He didn’t see a wife hurting or begging for change. He saw a threat. He knew what the words we need to talk meant to me and he wielded them like a sword.”

“The first time he used it was simply to alert me of something but he saw the fear as my whole body froze. Ever since that day, he used it as a tool whenever I did something he didn’t agree with. When he found out I was behind the art, he screamed it at me and out of all the awful things that happened the night I fell from Olympus, that’s the one I remember.”

“Why do I bring this up Colt? I saw the same tremble when I said those words to you. I want to reiterate I don’t take the phrase we need to talk lightly. So when I do say it, it’s important, I get the fear. There’s an inherent danger in them, probably similar trauma that I have. But it’s not like that, believe me.”

“This isn’t the Narcissa that strung you along, this isn’t the one who used the fact that you had stronger feelings than me. This is the person who actually developed respect for you. I know what you need and I can give it to you as long as I get what I need.”

“We both need information and because of that…”

“We need to talk.”
